Food poisoning on holiday? You don’t have to ride it out alone
Street food, seafood barbecues and ice in your drinks are part of island life, and sometimes your stomach disagrees. Food poisoning in the tropics is more than unpleasant: heat and sweating on top of vomiting and diarrhoea dry you out quickly, and that dehydration is what leaves you weak, dizzy and stuck in your room.
Our Traveller’s Tummy drip is for guests on Koh Phi Phi who have:
- Vomiting that stops you keeping water or rehydration salts down
- Diarrhoea several times a day, with cramps and weakness
- Signs of dehydration: dizziness when you stand, a dry mouth, very little or dark urine
- A ferry, flight or dive trip coming up that you don’t want to miss
Food poisoning IV ingredients
What’s in our food poisoning IV drip?
Your nurse prepares every drip fresh after a health check. Fluids are the core of the treatment; medication is only added when it is right for you.
| Ingredient | Why it’s in the drip |
|---|---|
| Electrolyte fluids (saline) | Replaces the water, sodium and potassium you lose through vomiting and diarrhoea, straight into the bloodstream, so it works even when you can’t drink. |
| Anti-nausea medication | Settles your stomach so you can rest and start sipping fluids again. Added on the nurse’s assessment. |
| Stomach protection | Medication that eases an irritated, acidic stomach. Added on the nurse’s assessment. |
| Vitamins (optional) | A B-vitamin or vitamin C booster if you have not eaten properly for a day or two. Ask your nurse. |
We never give antibiotics in a drip. If your nurse thinks you may need them, or any other prescription treatment, they will refer you to a doctor.
Is an IV drip good for food poisoning?
For most people, food poisoning gets better on its own within a few days, and drinking oral rehydration salts is the first treatment to try. An IV drip helps most when that isn’t working: when you vomit everything you drink, when diarrhoea is frequent, or when you already feel dizzy and weak. Fluids given into a vein rehydrate you faster than drinking, and anti-nausea medication can stop the cycle of vomiting so you can start eating and drinking again.
To be clear about what it can’t do: a drip doesn’t kill the bug causing the illness or shorten the infection itself. It treats the dehydration and the nausea, which are usually what make food poisoning so draining.
What happens during the visit?
Your nurse starts with a short health check: your symptoms and how long you have had them, blood pressure, pulse, temperature and any medication or allergies. If anything suggests you need a doctor rather than a drip, they will tell you straight away and help you get there. If a drip is right for you, a small cannula goes into a vein in your arm and the drip runs for about 60 min. You can lie down or sleep, and your nurse stays with you the whole time.
How much does a food poisoning IV drip cost on Koh Phi Phi?
Our Traveller’s Tummy drip costs from ฿3,900, including the visit to your hotel, bungalow, villa or boat on Phi Phi Don, the health check and a licensed nurse for the whole treatment. We confirm the full price on WhatsApp before we set off. Several people ill after the same meal? Ask for our group rate.
What can I do while I wait?
Take small, frequent sips of oral rehydration salts (sold as sachets at every 7-Eleven and pharmacy on the island), rest somewhere cool and avoid alcohol, coffee and fatty food. Our guide to food poisoning on Koh Phi Phi has a full shopping list and a day-by-day recovery plan.
When you need a doctor, not a drip
Some symptoms need a doctor or hospital, not a drip at your hotel: blood in your stool or vomit, a high fever, severe or constant stomach pain, confusion or extreme drowsiness, fainting, no urine for 12 hours or more, symptoms lasting more than 3 days, or illness in a pregnant woman, a small child, an older person or someone with a serious medical condition. Call 1669 (Thailand emergency medical services) in an emergency. Our guide to medical help on Koh Phi Phi lists where to go on the island.

Food poisoning IV FAQ
Questions about food poisoning drips
How quickly will I feel better after the drip?
Most guests feel less dizzy and weak by the end of the drip, and anti-nausea medication usually works within minutes. The infection itself still needs time to clear, so expect to take it easy for the rest of the day.
Can you treat diarrhoea as well as vomiting?
Yes. The drip replaces the fluids and salts lost through diarrhoea. It doesn’t stop the diarrhoea itself, so keep sipping rehydration salts afterwards and see a doctor if it lasts more than 3 days or you see blood.
Do you give antibiotics?
No. Most food poisoning doesn’t need antibiotics, and when it does, a doctor has to decide. If your nurse thinks you need a doctor’s assessment, they will tell you and help you get one.
Can the nurse come to my hostel room or boat?
Yes. We treat guests in hotel rooms, hostels, bungalows, villas and on boats anchored around Phi Phi Don. Send your hotel name and room number, or a map pin if you are on a boat.
Is it safe to have a drip when I’m this ill?
A health check comes first, and you are only treated if a drip is appropriate. Every drip is given by a licensed Thai nurse with sterile, single-use equipment. Read our safety standards.
